Performance buyers usually arrive with a modality in mind and a question about timing. That is the right instinct, because in this category when you use something matters as much as whether you own it.
The timing questions that matter
- Cold after lifting. A controlled trial reported that cold-water immersion immediately after resistance training attenuated muscle adaptation over twelve weeks. Moving cold away from strength sessions is the practical response.
- Cold after endurance or competition. A different case, and the one most of the supportive soreness research addresses.
- Heat. Generally used away from training rather than immediately after it.
- Light. Studied both before and after exercise, with effects tightly dependent on dose, timing, and treatment distance.
How to choose within performance
For performance buyers the specification question is usually secondary to a scheduling one. What matters:
- What you are training for. If strength adaptation is the goal, the timing evidence changes when you use cold, not whether you own it.
- Where you train. Equipment at home gets used on the days you skip the gym; equipment at the gym does not.
- Repeatability. A system that holds a temperature exactly is what makes a protocol possible at all.
- Session frequency. Daily use justifies a specification that occasional use does not.
The configuration that suits a strength athlete is not the one that suits an endurance athlete, and the difference is mostly about when the equipment is used rather than which model is bought.
What the evidence supports
A meta-analysis has compared post-exercise recovery techniques against each other on markers of muscle damage, soreness, fatigue, and inflammation, and photobiomodulation has been reviewed specifically in human muscle tissue in the context of sports performance.
What it does not establish
Objective performance effects — strength, power, jump height — are small or absent in the better-controlled analyses, with clearer effects on perceived fatigue and soreness. Many light studies used clinical laser devices rather than consumer panels. Optimal parameters are not established for any modality here, and none of this establishes a performance guarantee.
The sources are listed in the Research Library, each with its key limitation recorded. Category guides cover the specifications that differ within each technology, the product finder narrows the range in four questions, and recovery room planning covers what changes when several systems share one space. Commercial buyers should start at IMPERVITA PRO.
